We believe that teaching kids where their food comes from and how to choose and prepare it is key to helping them develop healthy eating habits for life. Recently, we talked to six amazing Food Superheroes about what they have learned in programs at their Community Food Centre. Check out what Thea Veronica, a 15-year-old from Winnipeg, had to say:

Name: Thea Veronica

Superhero name: Salad Master

Best new food skill: Cutting up and disassembling a whole chicken with my bare hands!    

Where she learned it: The Teen Food Justice Club at NorWest Co-op Community Food Centre, where youth ages 14-19 learn to cook dishes from around the world while developing food skills, knowledge and attitudes to live healthy lifestyles in adulthood.

New food she’s tried for the first time: Brown rice, zucchini, Thai curry

One thing she learned that she didn’t know before: How to cut up and peel food properly.

How eating/sharing something she cooked herself makes her feel: So good! And proud. It feels so good to make food that’s healthy.

If you had to tell other kids one thing about why it’s important to eat healthy, what would it be? Eating healthy food does not have to taste gross! I’ve had the best, most delicious healthy food here at NorWest. The staff have taught us that we can eat food that is good for you AND delicious.
