At community food organizations across the country, a powerful force is at work: the collective spirit of volunteers. Volunteers dedicate their time, energy, and care to support these organizations, which are nourishing communities.

As we enter a new year, we take a moment to pay tribute to the incredible impact of volunteers in the community food sector. Their contributions are invaluable, shaping a brighter future for everyone they empower.

A heartwarming story from NorWest Co-op Community Food Centre

A touching example of volunteerism comes from NorWest Co-op Community Food Centre (CFC), which recently shared a beautiful story about a young volunteer named Aviel Tuazon. Aviel began volunteering in the summer of 2022, and his enthusiasm quickly spread through his circle of friends and high-school classmates. What started as one person’s commitment to making a difference has grown into an ongoing collective achievement.

Today, these young volunteers have turned the CFC’s Thursday Night Dinners into an almost self-sustaining program. Their role goes far beyond serving meals. They also connect with seniors, inspire younger kids, and infuse the community with new energy and enthusiasm.

The transformative power of volunteering

The effects of volunteering go both ways. One of the young volunteers at the Thursday Night Dinners shared: “When I first started volunteering here, I was very introverted and couldn’t even speak to others. But now, I’ve gained the confidence to socialize with anyone I come across.”

As our partners in the community food sector know, this kind of transformation is not unique. Many volunteers improve their confidence and social connections as they engage with their communities.

The energy and dedication of Aviel and his peers are a testament to the power of people, including young people, in shaping positive change. They are showing that every act of volunteerism, no matter how small, creates a ripple effect of kindness and connection that extends far beyond the immediate impact.

Our heartfelt gratitude to volunteers

From coast to coast to coast, volunteers in the community food sector are making a difference in every corner of the country. Whether they are working in community kitchens or organizing food programs, these heroes help to create a more just and compassionate society.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank Aviel, his wonderful peers, and every volunteer who dedicates their time and energy to these vital community programs. Your passion, commitment, and generosity are shaping a brighter future for all of us.
