Latest updates 10/11/2018 DARTMOUTH, NOVA SCOTIA, October 11, 2018 | A powerful story about food, friendship and community development in the north end of Dartmouth will have its world premiere at this month’s Devour! The Food Film Fest. Six Primrose is a film by Truefaux films which brilliantly captures the vision of the Dartmouth North Community Food Centre (now known as The North Grove Community Food Centre) and how its quest to address issues of the food insecurity, poor health and isolation knit a community together. Filmmaker and Truefaux co-founder John Hillis introduces viewers to Jessica, Charlie, Oras, Ken and Amanda, telling their individual stories of what led them to the community food centre, and more importantly, what keeps them coming back. “Six Primrose has brought me in touch with a group of extraordinary people, who face their problems with determination and their neighbours with empathy,” says Hillis. “I’ve been making films now for over twenty years, and none have made me feel this way. I love walking through the doors of the food centre.” The Dartmouth North Community Food Centre is a concept originated from a partnership between the Dartmouth Family Centre and Community Food Centres Canada, and is one of 10 centres across Canada. Together they created the Dartmouth North Community Food Centre which boasts a 20,000 sq. ft urban farm, an industrial teaching kitchen and a commitment to focus on the strengths of those who visit. It has become the heart of the community. Residents of Dartmouth North stop by daily for a coffee, a meal or just to socialize. On a weekly basis there is an affordable produce market and many free programs ranging from cooking, gardening, health food and fitness, and community action training. The community food centre has removed barriers to residents who want to participate and contribute by providing them with opportunity, support and resources. The centre’s activities, including the educational programs, are free. “You’re tired from surviving but you want to thrive, and you don’t realize that potential”, says Amanda Nickerson, whose story is featured in the film. “For somebody else to believe in you before you believe in yourself, that’s quite something”. Filmed on location, Six Primrose shows how the community food centre is more than a garden or a kitchen. It’s about people having purpose and a connection to others in a community that has endured ongoing systemic income insecurity. From seed, to harvest to mealtime, experience the beauty and strength of Dartmouth North and the resilience of its residents. To see a trailer of Six Primrose click here.
