NorWest Co-op Community Food Centre launched its Thursday afternoon affordable fruit and vegetable market at the end of February at the Blake Gardens Community Resource Centre in south Inkster, a neighbourhood with high food insecurity. Almost immediately, requests for romaine lettuce, spinach and cabbage started pouring in. The market's effect on the centre's drop-in space was immediately noticeable as well: "There tends to be a lot of crisis going on in Blake," says CFC Manager Kristina MacMillan.

On June 25, the Public Health Agency of Canada announced the second phase of its Innovation Strategy, which supports innovative programs across Canada to address public health issues and the underlying environmental, social, demographic and economic factors that affect healthier weights among children, youth, and families in Canadian communities.
