Walk into the NorWest Co-op Community Food Centre on any given day this month, and you’re likely to spot a curious display of sugar cubes, arranged in piles next to processed foods and beverages. An unusual sight, indeed, at a place that works hard to ensure the community has access to fresh, healthy foods every day.

On October 17, people across Canada will hit the streets for Chew on This!, a campaign to raise awareness and call for action on poverty and food insecurity. This annual day of action is led by Dignity for All and marks the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

With the development of a Canadian poverty reduction strategy underway, it’s critical that we raise our voices to demand a comprehensive and accountable anti-poverty plan that ensures dignity for all and addresses the multiple dimensions of poverty including food security, health and income security.

In the kitchen, a gaggle of kids are busy as bees, chopping, dicing, sautéeing, and simmering this week’s meal: a curried lentil, squash, and kale soup. Having plucked the kale themselves from the adjacent garden that day, the program’s kick-off meal is the perfect start for this field-to-fork approach to healthy eating.

Giving kids a say in what they cook and a hand in the harvest sets them up for a positive relationship with healthy food and eating behaviours.

In the Fall of 2016, The Alex Community Food Centre opened its doors to Calgary’s Forest Lawn neighbourhood. This community hub offers up healthy meals, community kitchens and gardens, education programs for kids, peer support, civic engagement activities, and public education. The word of its launch quickly spread across the community and this is how Typhenn and her partner came to learn about Community Food Centres Canada.
