The momentum for a basic income guarantee is growing. In April of last year the Ontario Government committed to funding a basic income guarantee pilot in Ontario. Former Senator Hugh Segal, long-time supporter of a basic income, prepared a Discussion Paper and for the past two months the government has been conducting consultations to gather public feedback on income security programs and what matters to the people of Ontario.
This is an exciting time for Ontario, and Canadians. The pilot is an important step that will help usher in a more humane and efficient way to reduce poverty. But it’s also a critical time. We need to make sure we get it right, and that’s where you come in.
If you didn’t have the opportunity to participate in the public consultations sessions,we've developed a document called The Basic Income Guarantee We Want to See that can provide a way for you to express your support a progressive basic income guarantee pilot in Ontario. If it aligns with your values and beliefs on the kind of welfare system you want to see in Canada, then sign it and email it to email@example.com.
The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2017.
