In the Fall of 2016, The Alex Community Food Centre opened its doors to Calgary’s Forest Lawn neighbourhood. This community hub offers up healthy meals, community kitchens and gardens, education programs for kids, peer support, civic engagement activities, and public education. The word of its launch quickly spread across the community and this is how Typhenn and her partner came to learn about Community Food Centres Canada.
She shared with us her story about why she became a monthly donor:
"I learned about Community Food Centres Canada from a friend about 2 years ago and I admire the model they use to provide access to food to low-income communities. I was very excited when I found out they were coming to Calgary, and I went to their open house last year to check it out. It looks great!
My partner and I are very interested in urban and community gardening; healthy foods and nutrition, and my partner's area of expertise are in urban food security. He has applied to volunteer at the Alex but I, unfortunately, don't have time, so I thought I would donate instead to this local organization that I respect and admire."
Monthly donations like Typhenn’s are an important ingredient to providing a reliable source of continuous funding to food skills, food access and advocacy programs across the country. They provide the fuel we need to help us plan for the future.
