Activists and academics from across Canada are calling for a universal federal plan to ensure all school children are getting healthy meals at school. From the piece: “Action is needed to address many contributing factors to food insecurity, like low income, poverty and the increasing costs of healthy and nutritious foods. But the advantage of school food programs is that they are universally available to all children. They can support the development of healthy eating patterns for all students, regardless of income.”

Latest report from the Daily Bread Food Bank says food bank usage is back to recession-levels in Canada’s largest city and is especially hitting seniors. From the piece: ““The whole problem is lack of income,” [Suzanne] Davison said. “You can only do so much with the money you get, right?”


New York City Offers Free Lunch for All Public School Students (Sean Piccoli and Elizabeth A. Harris, the New York Times)

Starting this school year, New York City Public Schools began offering free school lunches to all 1.1 million students in the system, joining other large American school systems in Boston, Chicago, Detroit and Dallas. From the piece: “This is about equity,” [Carmen] Fariña, [the schools chancelor] said. “All communities matter.””
