“There are so many opportunities here for everyone.”

Lots of extra hands were on deck to pick zucchini and serve up lunch at the Regent Park Community Food Centre last month, thanks to a handful of superstar volunteers from Manulife’s Toronto office.

On July 17, six employees spent the day pitching in wherever they were needed—digging in the gardens, plating up healthy meals in the kitchen, and even helping to build a shed for storing garden tools and supplies.

Manulife’s generous support of Community Food Centres Canada helps run FoodFit, a healthy eating and exercise program, in Calgary, Dartmouth, and Stratford, ON. But they didn’t stop with their gift—they wanted to get out in their community and experience what it takes to run programs on the ground.

Manulife staffers Sheetal and Pauline shared with us about what their day at Regent Park CFC meant to them.

“It was rewarding to give back to our city and see firsthand how volunteering can make a real difference,” says Sheetal, who works in Wellness, Disability & Life at Manulife. “It was an amazing team building experience that everyone enjoyed and we look forward to the next visit!”

“I received a lot of feedback from my colleagues about our volunteering day at CRC Regent Park Community Food Centre and they commented on how passionate the staff are about their work and the community,” says her colleague Pauline. “Everyone was very friendly and really took care of us throughout the day. We learned about the impact that the CFC has in its community, and we were able to see it with our own eyes throughout lunch service."

"Regent Park CFC is entirely inclusive and low-barrier, which was what attracted me in the first place," Pauline continued. "Inclusivity is an important part of our culture at Manulife so it was great to find a volunteer opportunity that mirrored that culture and reflected our values. There are so many opportunities here for everyone and we look forward to returning again soon.”
