When it comes to creating meals that energize, empower and inspire, few can outshine Shahzadi Devje.  She’s an award-winning dietitian, dedicated volunteer and an activist that pairs her passion to help others improve their health with a deep connection to causes that strengthen communities as well as the planet.

"I had a difficult childhood, but it inspired me to strive to serve others who are struggling. Giving back for me is rooted in the Islamic ethic as well as it being a Canadian value. Engaging in work like this helped me overcome my pain and fuelled my drive to make a difference in the world,” she says.

Shahzadi is the creator of Desi~licious RD Inc., a platform she uses deliver health and nutrition strategies to communities, non-profits, government, and businesses. This professional focus, combined with the volunteer and activist hats she wears so well, drew her to Community Food Centres Canada.

We share a common interest in elevating community growth through food. It’s no secret that food insecurity is such a big issue in Canada and around the world - and it’s one that I’ve experienced. I know that being food insecure can feel lonely, and can feel humiliating. And of course, it can impact every aspect of one’s life, both physically and mentally.

She particularly appreciates how Community Food Centres Canada (CFCC) programs help empower people, and we work hand-in-hand with communities to take control of their own issues while helping build skills and providing access to healthy food.

“I was really drawn to the fact that the communities you work with feel that they’re part of the solution, and have the opportunity to give back to others who are also struggling,” she says. “That strong sense of independence, confidence, and social conscience that is created is really wonderful and can have a lasting impact.”

In support of CFCC, Shahzadi is hosting 16-day trip to Morocco in partnership with Journeys with Heart. While the trip doesn’t take place until April 2020, she sees it as the start of something important: “This is for me just the beginning. There is so much more we can do collectively together - I would love to get involved in all sorts of ways. Here’s to a great, wonderful happy and healthy relationship!”
