In an op-ed for the Halifax Chronicle Herald, Nick Saul writes that social distancing existed long before the pandemic, but we called it by a different name: poverty.

Will our society use this opportunity to eradicate poverty once and for all? 

“Let’s turn the emergency response and tremendous generosity and empathy we’ve witnessed into system-wide change that remedies the deep divisions that have held us back for so long,” explains Saul. “We can start by demanding that no one in Canada should live below the poverty line—as nearly 4 million currently do.”
