Community Food Centres Canada (CFCC) congratulates President and CEO Nick Saul on being named to the Order of Canada.

Established in 1967, the Order of Canada is one of Canada’s highest civilian honours, recognizing outstanding achievement, dedication to community, and service to the nation.

Nick has been made a Member of the Order of Canada (C.M.) in recognition of his contributions to eliminating poverty and supporting low-income people to live with dignity, and driving a movement to make healthy food accessible to everyone.

CFCC’s staff and Board of Directors are proud that Nick’s unflagging commitment to using food as a tool to build better health, belonging, and social justice in low-income communities across the country is being recognized with this appointment. 

For more than 30 years, Nick has been involved in community-based work, first as an organizer in Toronto’s Alexandra Park neighbourhood, working with homeless men in the east end of the city, and then as the long-time Executive Director of The Stop Community Food Centre.

In 2012, he co-founded Community Food Centres Canada, with a mission to build and support vibrant, food-focused Community Food Centres and programs across Canada. He has received the Queen’s Jubilee Medal, the Jane Jacobs Award, and an honourary doctorate from Ryerson University in recognition of his contributions. 

“For as long as I’ve known him, Nick has single-mindedly pursued a vision of a Canada where everyone has a dignified seat at the table,” said Sandy Houston, Chair of the CFCC Board of Directors. “He has channelled our collective moral outrage at high rates of poverty and inequality into a hopeful project focused on supporting people to access food and find connection, hope, dignity, and empowerment.”
