The role of the Community Food Centre in building a local, sustainable, and just food system

Download
This report outlines how the Community Food Centre model that was developed at The Stop Community Food Centre can serve as a model to other organizations seeking to address issues of unequal access to food, poor health, and social isolation in their communities. Written by Nick Saul, Kathryn Scharf and Charles Levkoe, the paper incorporates a review of the literature on the social determinants of health and how food programs can address them. It also examines evidence gathered by the Stop regarding its impact of its programs in increasing good access and equity, reducing social isolation, and improving health and food skills.

This was one of five articles that the George Cedric Metcalf Foundation released in June of 2010 that together presented a new vision for how we think about, produce, and consume food.
